How to Find the Right NDIS Provider for You

Choosing an NDIS provider is one of the most important decisions you'll make as a participant. This guide walks you through what to look for, questions to ask, and how to switch if things aren't working.

Why choosing the right NDIS provider matters

Your NDIS provider delivers the supports in your plan - whether that's daily personal care, therapy, support coordination, or community access. A good match can significantly improve your quality of life and help you reach your goals. A poor fit can mean wasted funding, stress, and slow progress toward independence.

The good news: under the NDIS you have choice and control. You can change providers at any time, and you're never locked in.

Registered vs unregistered providers

Before you search, check how your plan is managed:

  • Agency-managed plans must use NDIS-registered providers only
  • Plan-managed and self-managed participants can use unregistered providers too

Registered providers have been audited against NDIS Practice Standards. Unregistered providers may still be excellent - many sole-trader support workers operate unregistered - but they haven't gone through the same formal quality process.

What to look for in an NDIS provider

  • Registration category - Providers are registered for specific support types. Make sure a provider's registration covers what you need (e.g. a provider registered for "support coordination" can't deliver "daily activities" supports unless they're also registered for that).
  • Location and availability - Can they service your suburb? Do they have capacity to take on new participants now, or is there a waitlist?
  • Experience with your disability - Does the provider have experience supporting people with your specific condition or needs?
  • Cultural fit - Do they communicate in a way that works for you? Do they respect your goals and preferences?
  • Pricing - Registered providers must charge at or below the NDIS Price Guide rates. Ask if they charge the full rate or offer any flexibility.

Questions to ask a potential provider

  1. What supports are you registered to deliver?
  2. Do you currently have capacity in my area?
  3. How do you match participants with support workers?
  4. What happens if my regular worker is sick or on leave?
  5. How do you handle complaints or concerns?
  6. Can I speak to current participants about their experience?

How to search for NDIS providers

AusCareGuide lists all registered NDIS providers across Australia, searchable by suburb, state, and support category. Each listing shows the provider's contact details, support categories, and whether they've claimed their listing.

The NDIS myplace portal also has a provider finder tool, though it can be less user-friendly. Your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or Support Coordinator can also help you identify suitable providers in your area.

How to switch NDIS providers

You can change providers at any time. The process depends on whether you have a service agreement in place:

  • If you have a signed service agreement, check it for notice periods - typically 2–4 weeks
  • Give written notice to your current provider as per the agreement
  • Ensure any unused funds are unbooked in the myplace portal before your new provider starts claiming
  • Your new provider will ask you to sign a new service agreement

You don't need to explain why you're switching, and a provider cannot penalise you for leaving.
