Frequently asked questions
What mental health services can I find here?
AusCareGuide lists psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, mental health social workers, occupational therapists, and community mental health support services sourced from the Healthdirect National Health Services Directory.
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
You can see a psychologist without a referral, but to access Medicare rebates you will need a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP. This plan allows up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year with a Medicare rebate.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
Psychologists are trained in psychological assessment and therapy but cannot prescribe medication. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental health and can prescribe medication. Both can provide therapy, but psychiatrists typically focus on more complex or severe conditions.
Can I access mental health services online?
Many mental health practitioners now offer telehealth (video or phone) appointments. When contacting a provider, ask whether they offer telehealth sessions if you prefer remote access.
